Roosters & Rituals Now Available

Hello everyone!

Back in the distant past of 2013 I released Chicken Heroics, a nonsensical chicken-based tabletop RPG.

I am happy to announce that after announcing it back in 2014 I have finally released Roosters & Rituals: More on Spellcasting in the World of Chicken Heroics. I hope you'll check it out.

Get your copy of the 13 page expansion today exclusively at DriveThruRPG for just $1.50.
Also I had thought I previously posted more of the art from this book on here but i couldn't find it so let me share one of my favorites. It's about magic items so I just covered two chickens in random junk.

A Kid & His Monster Pal

I'm releasing a small game today that I call "A Kid and His Monster Pal" It's a simple little thing so there's not much to say about it. It's like those -mons shows. Digimon, pokemon, monster Rancher, etc. Some kids and their monster pals go on adventures.

Of course there's a chicken in it too. This picture isn't in color in the book but it is here so feel free to enjoy it.

Available for $1 exclusively on DriveThruRPG!

Mini Skeleton

Back when I last drew a skeleton I swore I would never do it again.  I am a liar. I wanted a little skeleton chicken to go with the rest of the minis in that game I made. So I made one. It's here for all to see. It's pretty good I think, given the constraints I chose to work in.

Chicken Heroics d20 Conversion Guide

Back in the early 2000s, when D&D was quite successful the whole RPG industry was getting on board the OGL and making d20 products. Even unrelated products had a chapter for playing the game with d20 instead of the system in the book. And, given these things are true I see no reason to think I'm better than them. I would have made this a chapter of my book, but it requires me to paste the license in there to use it so I didn't. Instead it is a separate free product. Check it out. It's good for a laugh if nothing else.

Chicken Heroics in Print

I just reviewed the print proof of my silly Chicken Heroics game so I can tell you all this. It is now available through DriveThruRPG's Print on Demand program as a perfect bound paperback, in addition to the PDF option that was available previously.

My camera adjusted things to green for some strange reason, but the pages are quite white.

EDIT July 22nd: Now it's out.

Books

I sold 11 copies of Chicken Heroics, exceeding my sales goal by 1. I'm thrilled about it. So I did one more piece of art that would fit in it... Not that it's actually in it at all. Well, whatever I'm bound to do more with it at some point. Maybe this will slide in at that point. It's a chicken mage with three spell books floating around him. I mean that sort of thing is magic 101, right?

Chicken Heroics is Out!

Chicken Heroics is now out. This is our first for sale project, so I hope some of you will take an interest in it, though I'll admit it's rather niche, being a Tabletop RPG and all. A PDF version of the book is now available on DriveThruRPG (linked here) for the very reasonable price of $3. I suppose I should aim for some absurd number of sales... Let's go for 10 copies!

Experience a new and unique fantasy RPG setting in a world without elves, orcs, and dwarves! Or Humans for that matter.

Hatch a character and enter a world of fowl adventure!

Battle the Cult of Cluckthulu!

Confront a Tyrannosaurus!

You may be a chicken, but you aren't a coward!

With this project finished up I will probably get a proper start on some others I've had on the back burner.

RPG: Paper Miniature Photos

One of the niftier things I ended up doing as I made my game was paper miniatures, the prototype of which I showed previously. Now at that time It was a simple chicken with a base. I've made a few changes to that, but I'm not going to post up a sheet of them to show it off. Instead I printed them out, folded them up and snapped a couple of pictures. Well, they were make in MS Paint so I can probably get away with my MS Paint tag.

Chicken Heroics: Magic

Magic is a key part of all fantasy games. How it works and what it is matters. In this game Magic is the only part that does not use an opposing roll. You flip a number of coins and need to get a set number of heads. If you do then the spell worked, if not it fizzles away.

I actually used Gritty Sharpness for any chicken currently using a spell since it feels mysterious. I'm done adding things to this game. I'm going to polish things up, finish anything that is half done, and then it'll be done.

Character Sheet

I realized today that I haven't posted anything about Chicken Heroics since the end of July, the month I shared its existence with you all. I didn't stop working on it though. It's still going through the development process quite well. I just hadn't wanted to bog down my site with it, though I actually waste quite a bit of time on it.

This is the character sheet for my game. You know, a character sheet actually reveals a lot about a game. For example the fact that the game has Gold, though I guess I just wrote the letter G. You could have assumed that stood for anything.  Also the number of item slots being fixed is on purpose. You can only carry 10 things at a time. I don't like the book-keeping of weights and what have you that some RPG inventories require, and most players ignore, but I also don't like carrying everything and the kitchen sink so a fixed number of item slots seemed good to me.

Also I assume you can doodle, which might be rude, but look. It's not like the portrait has to be some sort of high class piece of fine art. Just needs to send the basic idea of what your guy looks like. I mean the two silhouettes on the sheet are already there to give you an impression of it being about chickens.

Anyways this went through several revisions already, and will probably go through at least a couple more.

RPG: Combat

Hello, I am going to talk a bit about the way my game's combat system works, but first I'm going to say that I really like this picture and will definitely be keeping it in the book, assuming I can get the layout to cooperate.

So, the combat system in Chicken Heroics is pretty simple. You roll your attack and try to beat the target's defense roll. If you fail then the next person goes. If you succeed then it reduces the target's defense so he's easier to hit next time. Once he can't defend at all you need to hit him once more to knock him out of the fight.

I purposely didn't call being defeated as death, but I'm not sure if that's good. It basically means the only way to be killed is in a Total Party Kill or by GM fiat. Perhaps I will add the option to finish off a target who has been knocked out of combat.

Also do these articles about my project bother anyone? I mean I could just continue quietly working on it without saying anything if they do.

RPG: Paper Miniatures

Paper miniatures, that you can fold up and use right on your table have always been something that I favored. They're cheap and they seem like something that ought to be included with something like Chicken Heroics, though the game doesn't actually have rules for using minis and a map so perhaps I'll add those in. At least some basic rules. I mean I'm inclined to use them for the exploration part of the game even if they aren't important for the combat.

At any rate this was my first draft of a chicken paper mini, so it still has to be tweeked a bit.

Swords and Wands

I have always been willing to just go ahead and give the characters on this site things that they have no real way of using, like swords. (I actually haven't done it in longer than I thought.) This has led to a few jokes about everyone obviously being psychic. They don't have hands so how do I presume they hold these things. Stuff like magic wands is actually more acceptable, since they could obviously be doing it because they're magic.

Anyways with that in mind I started writing a short side-bar for my RPG to remind people that it makes no sense to give their chicken a sword.  They need like, some cowboy spurs. I made magic rings instead of wands, since to me it made more sense. Weapons are defined in a pretty vague manner in this game so there's nothing really stopping them from making up whatever weapon they want. I just wanted them to think about it.

But then I realized that that was silly. Magic Swords are what fantasy is all about. How would you know the farmer is a farmer if he wasn't holding a pitch fork? Is a dapper gentleman as dapper if he doesn't have a cane? Obviously they tuck them under the wing like this viking did or hold it with their mouth.
This picture was an attempt to make someone who looked properly armed and ready for things. I like the look of that little secondary beak horn thing, but he is way under-armed and the perspective made it awkward to draw in things like armor.

Chicken Heroics: The Chicken Maker RPG

Chicken Heroics is something I've been working on for a while now. It is a tabletop RPG where everyone is a chicken. It uses piles of coins instead of silly things like dice. (sorry Heaton) Oh, and the fantasy setting has gods like Cluckthulu and a Tyranosaurus. Knew I'd find a use for that generic fantasy setting.

Anyways this is a picture of the current version of the cover. I'm just posting something so I won't be able to back down later. I've already been working on it for more than a month in secret so I don't expect I will, but you know.

This is going to be a for sale product, but I'll be posting things on here anyways. It's no fun if you don't go at it full force, after all. Don't suppose I can get some questions or passive interest in this. I mean I hardly shared anything about it after all.

This was my original drawing of coins, but they just weren't good enough. Art that I decided wasn't good enough to sell and threw out of that is good with you guys right? I mean if I don't post it it'll just get thrown out.
